In certain circumstances, there is a high correlation between what a martial art practitioner and a football player try to achieve. They both must defeat their opponent with the most efficient use of the body and their bodies natural weapons. Pass protection and martial arts hand drills may be categorized to:
•Stance and set •Center of gravity •Angles •Target •Concentration •Leverage •Blow delivery •Footwork
Each of these components develops the pass protector. This style of training, utilizing martial arts for football, is not a new concept. Back in 1978 Bob Ward, the Dallas Cowboys strength coach, implemented martial arts training within its strength and conditioning program.
While the NFL becomes more sophisticated in using these techniques, it is time for the grappler and mixed martial artist to venture into this virtually untapped market. There are hundreds of camps, seminars and teams that involve football skills that are always looking for something new and inventive to give their participants an edge on the gridiron.
Embracing martial art techniques and Football can be proved an immense advantage for a football player, enhancing his performance in a way that he couldn't even imagine.
