The martial art of Gongkwon Yusul was founded in the mid-nineties between 1996 and 1998 by Master Kang Jun. Master Kang Jun has trained extensively in many martial arts. He started his training at the age of five, training a huge array of martial arts. He even studied Taekwondo as a degree program at University. The most predominant influences to be seen in Gongwon Yusul are Hapkido, Hako-Ryu Jujutsu, Judo with a lot of groundwork, and Thai Boxing. In Gongkwon Yusul, they also practise some exercises similar to Hard Qigong to strengthen the knuckles and other parts of the body. This they practise with leather puching boards with springs inside and Okinawan Karate like Makiwara Boards Unlike many schools of Hapkido defences are practised to flowing and changing attacks rather than simple and static arm or lapel grabs. Just as in Hapkido, the joint locks and submissions seem to be practised until the point of pain and near-breakage. The throws practised are also practised whilst moving, in such a way that they could be readily applied in MMA. The groundword is extremely smooth and a lot of the hapkido standing locks and submissions have been re-adapted to the ground. Due to its combination of fighting sports with traditional martial arts, it has been extremely successful in Korea, though there are as yet only three places where it is trained outside Korea (Brazil, Melbourne and Launceston, Australia).

The martial art style of Brazilian Jiujitsu was started by the Gracie family. A japanese in brazil tought the Gracie family Japanese Koshen Judo and Jujutsu. From this basis, they developed Garcie Jiujitsu or Brazilian Jiujitsu, BJJ. BJJ is especially well-known for its groundfighting skills. This however overlooks the fact that a lot of training time is also devoted to stand-up defense skills and takedowns. Gracie Jiujitsu has a clear strategy. If it is possible take care of the attacker standing up with joint locks, chokes, side-kicks to the knees, elbows to the face, takedowns with heavy falls onto a pavement. |

Yiquan martial arts was invented by Grandmaster Wang Xiangzhai (1886-1893). As a sickly boy, in the Shen District, Hebei Province, he started to train Chinese Gongfu style Xingyi Quan with the very famous master Guo Yunshen. Guo Yunshen is supposed to have taken a special liking to hil and to have shown him the special postures which had made him into such a strong fighter, and which Wang later used as the basis of Yiquan. Following almost ten years of training with the Yunshen, Wang started to travel China training with many famous Kungfu masters. He trained White Crane in the South, Taiji in the Centre, Baki in the North and a series of other styles including chinese swword. Following a challenge, after blocking the first shot Wang hit back causing instant death in one shot. He was put into prison as it was expected that such a great kunfgu practitioner should be ableo to defend himself without causing death. |
